biodegradable polymers

BIODEGRADABLE POLYMERS

polymers are widely used in the form of packing material and throw away that bag.The plastic thrown away after use are not biodegradable.this produce a serious waste disposal problem.Scientist these days are carrying on researches to develope plastic which are capable of biodegradability over the period of time

Biodegradable polymers can broken in to small segment by enzyme-catalyzed reaction.the required enzymes are produced by microorganisms.Ii is observed that carbon-carbon bonds of chain growth polymers are inert to enzyme -catalyzed reactions, hence they are non biodegradable. In order to make these polymers degradable,we have to insert certain bonds in the chain so that these can be easily broken by enzymes.one of the best methods of making a polymer biodegradable is by inserting hydrolysable ester group into the polymer.
